Stephen Melvin Ray

Stephen Melvin Ray of Enterprise, AL passed away peacefully Thursday, July 23, 2026, at his home. He was 78.

Private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Steve found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved hunting and fishing, tending his garden, and Japanese maples. A talented chef and true grill master, he especially enjoyed preparing meals for those he loved. Above all, Steve’s greatest love was his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, a loving grandfather, and a cherished great-grandfather whose family was the center of his life.

Steve honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years of dedicated service. During his distinguished military career, he served during the Cold War and the Vietnam era. After his retirement, he continued to serve his community at First Command Financial Services for 20 years. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his love of the outdoors, his generous spirit, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Berniece Ray and brother Kenny Ray.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Joan Ray, Enterprise, AL; daughter, Meredith Ray Painter (Frank), Troy, AL; son, Cameron Aaron Ray (Amy), Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Madison Painter-Logan (Tyler), Sebastian Ray, and Penelope Ray; great-grandchild, Mason Logan; two sisters, Judy Needy (Cliff) and Connie Ray; numerous other loving family and friends.
