Sara Metcalf Mixson of Hoover, AL passed away Thursday, February 5, 2026, at her home. She was 88.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 12, 2026, at First Methodist Church with Rev. Matt Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time.
Sara Metcalf Mixson was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on June 27, 1937, the youngest of three children of Stephen Ray and Theola Metcalf. After graduating from Enterprise High School, Sara studied home economics at Auburn University, where she met the love of her life, Andy Mixson. From there, they married in August 1956, and for over 40 years, Sara devoted her life to supporting Andy in his veterinary career as they moved across the country.
Sara was a beloved mother whose skill in planning and meeting practical needs was beyond compare. A fierce prayer warrior, Sara spent countless hours day and night interceding for her family and friends through personal crises and discouragement. Her wit and plainspokenness were equally matched by her warm generosity. Over the years, Sara taught children's Sunday School, prepared and served food for the homeless, sent thoughtful cards and banana bread to the sick and grieving, and crocheted shawls for ladies in the nursing home.
Sara is preceded in death by her husband, Andy Mixson.
Sara is survived by her sons, Michael Mixson of Hoover and David Mixson of Auburn; her daughter, Andrea Mixson of Pelham; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will remain forever grateful for the extraordinary care and spiritual encouragement of her dear caregiver and friend, Vivian, and her lovely daughters.
