“This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” — Psalm 118:23
Indeed, Kristin was amazing. And now, her spirit soars in heaven, where the fields are endless and the game never ends.
When I think about Kristin being gone from this world, I can’t help but picture her doing what she loved most — playing soccer on Heaven’s glorious field. I see her sprinting down celestial sidelines, a ball at her feet, with the angels watching from the bleachers and cheering her name: “KIA! Kristin is Amazing!”
Because truly, she was.
The word “great” barely scratches the surface. Kristin Alain Fowler Schmid was — and remains — amazing. From a young age, her brilliance, strength, and determination were unmistakable. Childhood friends didn’t just admire her; they coined a name that stuck for life: “KIA,” standing for Kristin Is Amazing. That nickname followed her, as did her passion, her courage, and her kindness.
Kristin was a warrior in every sense of the word. After graduating from Savannah State College with a degree in Accounting, she commissioned as a U.S. Army Finance Officer, before transitioning into the skies as an Aviation Officer and eventually a Warrant Officer. She served her country with distinction as a Blackhawk pilot and instructor, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 (P) before retiring in 2018. Her dedication took her to the frontlines — Afghanistan (twice), Bosnia, Honduras — and brought safety and inspiration to those who served beside her.
But before the uniform, there was the jersey. Kristin was a spectacular athlete — a star soccer player at North Miami High School and for elite traveling teams. Her fierce competitiveness on the field was matched only by the joy she radiated while playing. Her love for movement, challenge, and the outdoors never waned. Whether hiking new trails, tossing discs across courses, fishing in deep seas, basking on sunny beaches, or marveling at elephants on a 2019 African safari or the markets of Morocco in 2024 — Kristin lived fully, passionately, amazed by life and amazing to all who knew her.
Kristin was preceded in death by her loving mother Jane, her father Sam, her step-father Anthony Delucca, and her brothers Bruce and Jimmy Fowler. She leaves behind a vast, loving family: her former husband Leland Schmid, her siblings Sam Jr., Laurel, Valarie, and Stephen Fowler; six De Lucca step-siblings — Tony, Mike, Gary, Donald, Robert, and Nanette; cherished nieces and nephews; and her beloved Soccer Sisters and countless dear friends.
The hole Kristin leaves behind is immense, but so too is the legacy she leaves: of courage, service, adventure, and boundless love. She was our teammate, our hero, our sister, our shining soul.
And now, she plays in peace — no longer fighting, no longer flying into danger — but soaring higher than ever.
Rest well, KIA. You are still amazing.
