Whether her role as a mom, mother-in-law, friend, sister, aunt, or grandmother, you’re sure to remember that smile and that laugh. Her wit, whether spoken with intention or whether shared spontaneously was quick and to the point.
Her most treasured time in life was the time spent with her five children, who were all around her in her final days. She often spoke of her children as her “magnificent obsession” and used the example of the best times being when they were all together close to her wing. Above all, she loved God and was a faithful and kind believer to those who crossed her path all her life. She showed affection easily and expressed love in word and deed.
Dot was a dedicated and patriotic military wife serving by her husband’s side for 41 years, remaining in the Officer’s Wives Club for decades even after his passing in 1995. She was a member of the Lion’s Club in Daleville, Alabama and enjoyed the social aspects of all her civic and community associations.
Dot was blessed with talent. An accomplished and award-winning artist in several mediums, she shared her gift of painting and crafting with many. She was an author of short stories and poetry and had some of her writings published locally.
She was a graduate of Auburn University and a fan of the Auburn football team and was known to yell “War Eagle” whether in the stadium watching live or in recent months with residents at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab facility. Dot excelled as a homemaker, being featured in the Starkville, Mississippi Newspaper as an exemplary mom. She also loved her community where she lived most of her life in Daleville, Alabama, even being selected as Woman of the Year.
She was a sweet storyteller and enjoyed reading a good book, primarily non-fiction, with her topic of choice being WWII military history and communications. She also enjoyed Christian based writings and publications.
The coastal sand or grass under her bare feet were welcomed. She enjoyed RVing with her family for entire summers across the USA or weekend trips to the Gulf Coast, scalloping or fishing and tailgating in Auburn. Throughout her seventies, if she felt like traveling to visit children across the country or getting on a plane for a fun trip to Europe with her sisters, she did it. She did not shy from adventure.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lt Col (Retired) Charles A. Spencer, her parents Collier C. Morrison and Clarine E. Harper Morrison; sister, Colleen Morrison Oakes; and a grandson, Justin C. Spencer.
Survivors include her children, Collier Spencer (Sandra), East Palatka, FL; Lisa Spencer, St. Augustine, FL; Timothy Spencer (Tammala), Panama City, FL; Laura Spencer Favaloro (Frank), Baton Rouge, LA; Thomas Spencer (Courtney), Mount Holly, NC; Five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Gail M. Weaver (Courtney); Sarah M. Medley (Jim); brother-in-law Glen D. Oakes; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
